【記事について】
W.シェイクスピアの『ソネット集』に収められた154のソネット（14行の定型詩）を順番に訳していきます。翻訳は今回で3回目になります。
【詩について】
前回と同じく、今回の第44歌は美青年宛のソネット（1～126番）の一つです。この詩は、自然の構成要素を火・空気・水・土の四つと考える四元素説を取り入れながら、青年の元へ飛んで行ける想い（火・空気）と物理的に運動が制約されている肉体（水・土）を対比する一篇です。「自分が思いのように身軽ではないという思いが辛い」（thought kills me that I am not thought））という一節からは、この主題自体と戯れる詩人の機知が伺えます。
【翻訳】
肉体という鈍い実体が思いと同じなら
意地悪な距離も僕の行く手を阻めない。
それなら僕は空間を無視して向かおう、
遥か遠くの果てから君のいるところへ。
問題はなくなるのだ、僕の立つ場所が
たとえ君から最も遠く離れた大地でも。
身軽な思いは海も陸も飛び越えられる、
彼のいる場所を思うだけでたちまちに。
だが！僕が思いではないと思うと辛い。
何マイルもの遠方にいる君を追うなど
土と水が多過ぎる僕にはできないから
僕はしぶしぶ時の暇潰しに随行するが
こののろまな元素たちから貰えるのは
重い涙という二人分の悲哀の紋章だけ。

If the dull substance of my flesh were thought,
Injurious distance should not stop my way;
For then despite of space I would be brought,
From limits far remote, where thou dost stay.
No matter then although my foot did stand
Upon the farthest earth removed from thee;

But ah! thought kills me that I am not thought,
To leap large lengths of miles when thou art gone,
But that, so much of earth and water wrought,
